Nature of request
Wardeden and Boxhurst state that whereas by the common law no one can be taken or their goods seized into the king's hand if it isn't done for a rightful reason. However the king has ordered by his writs to certain people of taking them, and seizing their lands and chattels into the king's hand because of information given by certain mortal enemies of the petitioners accusing them of being in conspiracy with enemies overseas of which they are by no means culpable which they wish the king will enquire of in all the ways he will ordain. They request remedy, otherwise in such case any man can be destroyed by his enemies.
Nature of endorsement
At what time they will wish to submit and surrender themselves to the law, they should have answers according to the law.
Note
Securely datable to 1346 as a writ to Robert de Mounceaux, the king's serjeant at arms, and to the sheriff of Kent ordering them to supercede the earlier instructions to take the petitioners, and to return their goods under mainprise was enrolled on 25 September 1346 (CCR 1346-9, p.154). This was clearly in response to the petition.
