Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/15/748
Date
[c. 1361]
Description
Petitioners
Edward de Wodeham (Woodham).
Name(s)
de Wodeham (Woodham), Edward
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Wodeham states that he was seised of a marsh which was lately held of Fitz Bernard from his manor of Thundersley by the service of five and a half marks. Fitz Bernard by a fine levied in the court of Henry III granted the rent to Henry, then prior of Merton and his successors, saving the lordship to him and his heirs. During Wodeham's minority his guardian paid the rent to John Stourmy by a usurpation of the manor. Subsequently Donald Stourmy sold the manor to the king, because of which Wodeham has been distrained to pay the rent to the king, whereas he pays the same rent to the prior of Merton. He has sued on several occasions, but has not received a discharge. He requests that he be granted that he should not pay the rent twice.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered into Chancery, and justice be done there.
Places mentioned
Thundersley, [Essex].
People mentioned
Ralph son of Bernard (Fitz Bernard)
Henry [de Basinges], Prior of Merton
John Stourmy
Donald le Stourmy.
Note
Dating to sometime after 8 October 1361 when Donald Sturmy granted and quitclaimed his rights in Thundersley to the king of which the petition makes reference (CCR 1360-4, pp.285-6). The petitioner mentions that he has sued several times on the matter, so some time must have elapsed since the grant. However it is unlikely to be that long after 1361, so a date of c. 1361 seems acceptable.
