Reference
SC 8/15/745
Date
[1333-1345]
Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey de Lucy, bachelor of the king.
Name(s)
de Lucy, Geoffrey
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Lucy states that he and his ancestors have been seised of a rent of eight weys of cheese from the manor of Milton in Kent, which manor was seised into the hand of the king's progenitors. The rent is now withdrawn by order of Glovyl because the manor is held by Queen Philippa for the term of her life. Lucy has sued before the council of the queen, but they have answered that they cannot settle this thing without the king. Lucy requests that a remedy be ordained for him since he can readily show that he has right and reason to have the rent.
Nature of endorsement
Let the council of the queen be summoned before the council of the king so that justice can be done of the things contained in this petition.
Places mentioned
Milton, Kent.
People mentioned
Geoffrey [de Glovyl], councillor of Queen Philippa
Philippa of Hainault, Queen of England.
Note
The petition is dated to 1333 when Queen Philippa acquired the manor of Milton (CPR 1330-4, p. 439) and is given a date range to 1345 based on the hand. A date range as far as the queen's death in 1369 seems unnecessary, and it seems unlikely that the petitioner would have waited till late in the queen's life to make his claim, the petition probably being earlier in the adopted range.
