Reference
SC 8/15/744
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Hampton, clerk.
Name(s)
de Hampton, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Hampton shows that he had the church of Our Lady in Shrewsbury, a free chapel of the king, from Edward II. Afterwards Nicholas de Ludlow procured a collation from Edward III to the same church, alleging that Hampton was dead, by virtue of which collation he ejected Hampton by force, and despoiled his goods, and still detains the church to Hampton's great damage. He requests that the king revoke the collation, and restore Hampton to his estate, and that the king ordain a suitable remedy in this case.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by writ of Chancery containing the effect of this petition to the justices assigned to hold the pleas of the king, that when they have summoned before them the parties and heard their arguments, and viewed their commissions, they should do justice.
Places mentioned
Salopesbury (Shrewsbury), [Shropshire].
People mentioned
Nicholas de Lodelowe (Ludlow).
Note
The date of c. 1331 is the closest that we are likely to get as Ludlow received ratification of his estate as dean on 8 October 1331 (CPR 1330-4, p.181). The matter had presumably been settled by this time.
