Reference
SC 8/15/739
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey de Chintriaco, Prior of Lenton.
Name(s)
de Chintriaco, Geoffrey
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Prior of Lenton
Nature of request
The prior shows that the pope commanded him by his letters to give the cardinal possession of the church of Ratcliffe, but the prior did not dare to do this since he was forbidden by writs of the king until the plea of the earl of Lancaster and the prior of Norton had been tried. However, because of this the house has been badly treated at the court of Rome to the great damage of the house. The prior requests that the king send letters to the pope to excuse the prior, and have regard for that the prior held back because of royal power, and that messengers going there be so instructed.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the king ought to aid him, but nevertheless before the king.
Places mentioned
Ratcliffe on Soar, [Leicestershire]
Rome, [Italy]
Norton, [Cheshire].
People mentioned
Pouget, Cardinal
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Prior of Norton.
Note
The king issued letters prohibiting the prior from going to Rome on 28 April 1320 (CCR 1328-23, p.228). As this petition refers to these, and to the fact that his failure to appear at Rome caused his house to be badly treated suggests some time delay, perhaps a year or so. To be safe a date of c. 1320 seems acceptable.
