Description
Petitioners
Alan de Retlyng, abbot of Battle.
Name(s)
de Retlyng, Alan
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
abbot of Battle
Nature of request
The abbot shows that he has a charter of Henry III granting to the abbot and his successors that at all times when the king assigns justices in eyre to each of the counties where the abbot has lands or tenements, the abbot should have cognisance of all pleas concerning him and his tenants within his own liberty. In accordance with this, before this time the abbot has had writs out of Chancery to the justices to allow the liberty, and he has sued to have such a writ directed to Clinton and his companions for pleas concerning his tenants of Wye who are indicted before the justices and taken and imprisoned, and he is not able to have this without the advice of the council. He requests that the council order that he have a writ in this case as he ought to have, so that he does not lose his liberty, because the justices will do nothing without an order by writ.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have a writ upon his charter to the justices such as at other times he has had.
