Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/15/736
Date
[c. 1323-1334]
Description
Petitioners
Prior of the Hospital of St John outside the New Gate of Dublin.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of the Hospital of St John outside the New Gate of Dublin
Nature of request
The prior shows that his church and other houses were burnt along with the suburb of Dublin by the Scots, and his granges are robbed and destroyed by the Scots and Irish. He also is heavily indebted because of the sustenance of the brothers and the poor and the sick. He requests that in relief of the hospital the king grant to the hospital the deodands of his Irish lands; and also grant the advowson of the church of Garristown after the death of its parson. Without the aid of the king the hospital will not be able to sustain its activities.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Let it be ordered to the justiciar of Ireland that he should have regard for the hospital's poverty, giving them their deodands, and those of others by his discretion.Concerning the second petition, the king does not wish anything to be done.
Places mentioned
Dublin, [Ireland]
Ballyogary (Garristown), [County Dublin, Ireland].
People mentioned
William de Bardesby, parson of the church of Garristown.
Note
A note on the guard dates this petition to 1334, with reference to a grant of deodands for seven years made in that year (CPR 1330-4, p.552). However, that grant appears to be in response to another, very similar petition, now at SC 8/181/9006, which bears an endorsement explicitly referring to a grant for seven years. The 1334 grant does refer to an earlier grant of these deodands, to be implemented 'at the will of the justiciar', and that is probably the grant noted in the endorsement here. An earlier grant for four years was made in 1319 (Rot. Canc. Hib., p.27b), and thus it seems likely that the present petition dates to some point in the intervening period, between the end of that 4 year grant (c. 1323) and 1334.
