Reference
SC 8/15/735
Date
[1360]
Description
Petitioners
William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury.
Name(s)
de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Montagu states that the king granted to his father the castle of Denbigh and the cantrefs of Rhos, Rhufoniog and Ceinmeirch as appears by his charter. Afterwards by judgement of the king's court, at the suit of Roger de Mortimer he was ousted from them. Since that time he has sued for a long time before the king to order the council to make compensation according to the purport of his charters.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the petition is reasonable if it pleases the king.
Places mentioned
Dynbegh (Denbigh), [Denbighshire, Wales]
Roos (Rhos) cantref, [Denbighshire, Wales]
Rewennek (Rhufoniog) cantref, [Denbighshire, Wales]
Keymere (Ceinmeirch) cantref, [Denbighshire, Wales].
People mentioned
William Montagu, [Earl of Salisbury], father of the petitioner
Roger de Mortimer, Earl of March.
Note
The petition seems to date to 1360, as the guard suggests. This dating comes from a lengthy enrolment on the patent rolls concerning the matter (CPR 1360-4, pp.32-3).
