Description
Petitioners
Tenants and commonalty of Bowland in the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The tenants and commonalty show that Adam de Clitheroe with 300 armed men came and took the venison of the king and wounded the foresters there to the great consternation of the people and the country, and entered the vaccaries in these parts, and destroyed all their livestock so that they cannot endure or live without speedy remedy. They request that the king, to save his estate, and stop such riots in times to come, ordain a good and suitable remedy on Clitheroe and his allies in those parts.
Nature of endorsement
Let certain people be assigned to hear and determine (oyer and terminer) for the king the trespass made of his venison, and also hear and determine each complaint of the tenants who wish to complain of Clitheroe and the others.
Places mentioned
Bowland, [Lancashire, Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Adam de Cliderhou (Clitheroe).
Note
This is likely to date to 1331 when a commission of oyer and terminer was issued concerning trespasses in the free chase of Bowland. However this only refers to Yorkshire, and the petition refers to both Lancashire and Yorkshire.
