Reference
SC 8/15/716
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Gardines, knight.
Name(s)
de Gardines, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Gardines states that Despenser held the manor of Nether Swindon by the service of a knight's fee, of which services Gardines was seised by Despenser's hand. The manor is forfeit by Despenser's forfeiture and in the hand of the king. Gardines requests that he is able to have the year and waste rendering the value to the Exchequer of the king, and after the year that he be able to hold the manor for him and his heirs by the laws of the land.
Nature of endorsement
He should wait as otherwise.
Places mentioned
Nether Swindon (Nethercott), [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester.
Note
This petition clearly dates to after the fall of the Despensers as it refers to the fall of the earl. It is likely that it dates to 1327 in the first year of the reign of the new king. The petition cannot be later than 1328 because Gardinis was dead by October in that year (CCR 1327-30, p.419).
