Description
Petitioners
Henry Springald; William le Smith; William Guldepreen; Robert Vigrous.
Name(s)
Springald; Smith; Guldepreen; Vigrous, Henry; William; William; Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners complain of Cleet that he wrongfully brought a writ of trespass against them, and as keeper of the liberty took a precept of the sheriff to have them put to gage and pledge, and secretly retourned that they had nothing of which to be distrained or to be found, and upon this sued a capias until they had satisfied him to the great ransom by obligation in deceit of the court and the prejudice of the king. They request remedy and that the liberty be better governed.
Nature of endorsement
Because they made satisfaction at their own will, nothing can be done.
Places mentioned
Lambourn, [Berkshire].
People mentioned
Richard le Cleet, Farmer and Keeper of the liberty of Lambourn
Sheriff of Berkshire.
Note
A very problematic dating as the guard locates this to 1324 simply on the basis of an unconnected reference to Cleet (CCR 1323-27, p.331). No other references suggest a different date.
