Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
John de Palmere (Palmer), of Winchester.
Name(s)
de Palmere (Palmer), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Palmere states that Edward II owes him £15 10s. for cloth taken from him by Stokes as appears by a bill of the wardrobe sealed by Woodhouse and Stokes. He requests that the king order that he be paid at the Exchequer, or elsewhere by assignment, or that the money be allowed against the money that Palmere ought to pay for the great custom for his wool that will pass through Southampton until the debt be fully paid, making an indenture between the keeper of the custom and him.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer that when they have viewed the bills of which this petition makes mention, if they find that the debt is still due then they are to make payment, allowance or assignment as soon as they decently can, receiving etc. and charging etc.
Places mentioned
Winchester, [Hampshire]
Southampton, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
Edward II, King of England
Ralph de Stokes, clerk of the Great Wardrobe
Robert del Wodehous (Woodhouse), keeper of the wardrobe.
Note
The dating comes from the guard note and is based on the less than satisfactory basis that the only reference to this individual in the first six years of Edward III occurs in 1331 (CCR 1330-3::p.334). It seems likely that it cannot be much before or after this date however.
