Reference
SC 8/15/708
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Newstead in Sherwood.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent show that they had by the gift of Henry II, by charter the vill of Papplewick with the wood pertaining to it in free alms, and they and their people of Papplewick had the right to cut heather within the wood for their own profit until Maulay and the other foresters disturbed them. They request remedy so that they are not disinherited and their tenants ruined.
Nature of endorsement
They should show their charter in Chancery, and if it is as their petition claims then they should have a writ to the keeper of the forest that he should suffer them to cut the heather and make their profit, notwithstanding that the wood is within the forest.
Places mentioned
Novel Lieu (Newstead), [Nottinghamshire]
Sherwood
Papplewick, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
Henry II, King of England
Robert de Maulee (Maulay), steward of the forest.
Note
The dating on the guard is to 'c.1331 sq.' with a reference to Pat R. p.364. Unfortunately there is no relevant entry on that page in any patent roll from 1327-1328, so the foundation for the date is very suspect.
