Description
Petitioners
John de Sutton, knight.
Name(s)
de Sutton, John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Warsop, [Nottinghamshire]
Clipstone, [Nottinghamshire].
Nature of request
Sutton shows that he holds the manor of Warsop from the king in chief. Over the preceding 10 years the king has enclosed his wood of Warsop within the manor forty acres of his land within the park of Clipstone to the great impoverishment of his tenants who ought to have common there. He requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by a writ to the justices of the Forest that they make enquiry of the things contained in the petition, and of all other necessary articles etc. And also let them search the muniments of Edward II to see if they can anything to bar Sutton, and return the inquisition and certification into Chancery and the king will consider this further.
Note
This must be late in Edward II's reign, as it is clearly stated that the enclosures had taken place in the last ten years or so of the current king. The guard suggests a date of? c. 1326, and this is not likely to be far wrong.
