Reference
SC 8/15/703
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Longden, Prior of Tutbury.
Name(s)
de Longden, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of Tutbury
Nature of request
The prior shows that the justices were assigned by the king to enquire of whose took the goods and chattels formerly of the earl of Lancaster at Tutbury. The prior was indicted by ill-wishers for the goods to the value of £70 by the order of Despenser, and the prior was not allowed his challenge to this and he was wrongfully condemned and has paid 320 into the Exchequer. He requests restitution and a release of the remainder.
Nature of endorsement
Nothing for this petition.
Places mentioned
Tutbury, [Staffordshire].
People mentioned
John de Stonore (Stonor), king's justice
Robert de Ailleston (Ayleston), king's justice
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
William Gentilcorps
Hugh Despenser.
Note
The guard dates this to c. 1323. It is not entirely clear that this is correct. Gentilcorps had been granted the bailiwick of the forestorship of the chases and parks of Tutbury on the 13 March 1322, only a day after the king had seized the castle there, and only 3 days before Boroughbridge. The inquisition referred to in the petition is much later, dating to 22 November 1323. It seems hard to believe that the justices could receive their commission, hold their inquisitions, indict and condemn the prior that quickly, and for him to have made payment of part of his fine. It also seems unlikely that petitions would be made overtly outlining the Despenser's role in the case had they still been in power. Equally however, no mention is made to this being during Edward III's first year, and to Edward II being the late king. How much weight we should place on this lack of reference to the late king is difficult. The petition is dated to c. 1327, though it could be earlier.
