Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/14/698
Date
[1331-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Richard of Tewing, prior of Tynemouth.
Name(s)
Tewing, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
prior of Tynemouth
Nature of request
The prior states that Adam held land of his church in Lilburn rendering a mixture of money rents, labour services and carrying services of which he and his predecessors had been served from time out of memory until Adam adhered to the Scots by whose forfeiture the escheator seized the lands into the king's hands. The prior requests that the king order by a writ to enquire of these things, and the inquisition returned so that law and reason can be done.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be assigned to certain men in Chancery to enquire in the presence of the escheator of the things contained in this petition, and of all other necessary articles etc. and the inquest returned into Chancery and justice be done.
Places mentioned
Lilburn, [Northumberland]
Bewick, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Adam the son of Nichols (Fitz Nichol, Nicson) of Lilburn.
Note
Fraser dates this to c. 1331-2. However it seems very likely that this must date to the parliament in September 1331 or less likely to the parliament of late January 1332 because a record of a grant of the lands during pleasure survives dated to 27 February 1332 which almost certainly is in response to the petition (CFR 1327-37, p.302). There is a reference to this petition in PROME Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum I, pp. 442-59 that is clearly wrong, and that seems to be based on a misreading of a handwritten note in a copy of Rotuli Parliamentorum.
