SC 8/14/697
Date
[c. 1324]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Touk.
Name(s)
de Touk, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Touk shows that he was appointed by the king as chief taxer of the tenth in Derbyshire in the sixteenth year of his reign. Afterwards the king ordered his justices to enquire concerning the taxation, and they arraigned Touk to examine how he had acted. He answered that he had taxed the people well and fairly, not taking any money by extortion nor to the detriment of the profits of the king which he offered to prove. The justices would not accept this, and forced him to make a fine for £100 which is double the value of his lands and he has paid £20. He requests that the £20 is restored to him and he is released from the rest.
Nature of endorsement
He should stand to the recognizance.
Places mentioned
Derbyshire.
People mentioned
Hervey de Stanton (Staunton), king's justice
John de Stonore (Stonor), king's justice
Robert de Aileston (Ayleston), king's justice.
Note
The petition must date to after December 1322 when Touk was appointed as an assessor and collector of the tenth and sixth (CPR 1321-4, p.224). It is likely that this is c. 1324, to give time for collection, and for the ensuing commission to the justices.
