Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/14/695
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Walter de Staneweye (Stanway).
Name(s)
de Staneweye (Stanway), Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Staneweye complains that Botiller and Golafre through the power of Despenser made a stranger bring a writ against him for land and rents in the vill of Little Comberton. Botiller procured an inquest where none of the jury dared to find against him by which he was deprived of the land unjustly. Staneweye has attempted to reclaim the lands by judicial proceedings, but has been prevented from doing so by his imprisonment at the hand of Botiller, and by false indictments. Staneweye requests a suitable remedy since the lands were wrongly taken from him, and he is forcibly disinherited as the country well knows.
Nature of endorsement
He should aid himself by the common law.
Places mentioned
Worcestershire
Little Comberton, Worcestershire.
People mentioned
John le Botiler (Botiller), steward of Hugh le Despenser the son in Worcestershire
John Golafre
Hugh le Despenser the son.
Note
The details on the guard suggest a date of c. 1325, and that Despenser was still in power. There is nothing in the petition to suggest this, nor any additional references to date this. It seems unlikely that this sort of petition would be brought while the Despensers were still in power, unless Staneweye wished to spend further time in gaol! It is far more likely that this petition would date to 1327 or thereafter when the Despensers were in no position to support their local officials.
