Reference
SC 8/14/691
Date
[c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
Robert Curzoun (Curzon), merchant of Norwich.
Name(s)
Curzoun (Curzon), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant of Norwich
Nature of request
Curzoun states that Edward II was bound to him in a sum of money by his letters under the cocket which he loaned him on wool by the hand of the customs collectors at Great Yarmouth. He requests that the king order payment to him or an allowance on his wool passing through the port.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer, that when they have viewed the letters of which the petition makes mention, if they find that the debt is still due then they should make payment, allowance or assignment as soon as they decently can, receiving etc. and charging etc.
Places mentioned
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk].
People mentioned
Edward III, King of England
John de Occle, customs collector of wool at Great Yarmouth
Robert de Draiton (Drayton), customs collector of wool at Great Yarmouth.
Note
There is no specific dating evidence for this, it seems to be referring to a loan from the first year of the reign, presumably of Edward III, and not his father. It is possible that it could be as late as 1330-1 when other petitions in this file requesting payment of debt date from, but it is perhaps a bit earlier. As the collectors are named, the petition can be no earlier than 15 June 1327 when Drayton was appointed to collect with Occle in Great Yarmouth (CFR 1327-37, p.48). c. 1328 seems a reasonable date to cover these possibilities.
