Reference
SC 8/14/685
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
John del Ille (Lisle) of Burley.
Name(s)
Ille (Lisle), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ille shows that the manor of Burley was taken into the king's hand because he was of the quarrel of the earl of Lancaster, and was placed in the keeping of Ashby who had to answer for only £33 though the manor was worth £112. He requests that Ashby be pursued to answer to him for the surplus if the council agrees, Ashby having had the manor for four years. He also requests remedy for oaks which Ashby has cut down in the woods of the manor and sold for profit, and for livestock and goods which he has taken.
Nature of endorsement
At the common law.
Places mentioned
Burley, Rutland
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Edmund Dassheby (Ashby).
Note
As the petition is clearly early in the reign of Edward III, and could be no earlier than 1326 as the petition notes that Ashby had the custody of the manor for 4 years, this petition must date to early 1327. As Lisle's complaint concerning the taking of livestock was the subject of a commission of oyer and terminer on 10 March 1327, the petition is likely to be earlier than that, the commission presumably being the product of Lisle's action at the common law (CPR 1327-30, p.79).
