Reference
SC 8/14/682
Date
[? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
John de Hernestede.
Name(s)
de Hernestede, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Hernestede shows that John de Lashley enfeoffed Rous who in turn enfeoffed Hernestede of some of his lands. Subsequently Lashley enfeoffed Despenser of the manor of Latchley and by his power wrongfully ousted Hernestede from his lands. By Despenser's forfeiture the lands are now in the king's hands. Hernestede requests grace.
Nature of endorsement
Let good men be assigned to enquire of the things contained within the petition, and when the inquisition has been returned into Chancery, the chancellor should do justice.
Places mentioned
Lashley, [Essex]
Bardfield, [Essex]
Stebbing, [Essex].
People mentioned
John de Lacheleye (Lashley)
John le Rous
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
The petition certainly dates to early in the reign of Edward III, as it makes mention of the fall of the younger Despenser. However the date on the guard of 1335 seems to have no substance for the fine roll entry refers to the death of Hernestede in 1335, and can therefore only provide a possible latest date (CFR 1327-37, p.456).
