SC 8/14/681
Date
[? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Williamscot.
Name(s)
de Williamscot, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Williamscot complains that he was with Berkeley who sided with the earl of Lancaster against the Despenser's. After Berkeley's surrender Hugh Despenser the father seized Williamscot's lands into the king's hands and subsequently Williamscot granted to Despenser the reversion of some of his land in Noke by a fine levied in the king's court. The lands are now in the king's hand by the death of the tenant and Despenser's evil purchase. Williamscot requests remedy
Nature of endorsement
He should sue in King's Bench in accordance with the statute for cancelling fines.
Places mentioned
Noke, [Oxfordshire].
People mentioned
Maurice de Berkele (Berkeley)
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Hugh le Despenser, [Earl of Winchester], the father
Hugh le Despenser, the son
Richard de Bere.
Note
The event described in the petition clearly occur from 1322 onwards, following the defeat of the baronial rebels and the execution of Thomas of Lancaster. As Williamscot refers to his exile abroad for a year or more, and to the Despensers as 'enemies of our lord the king' this cannot date earlier than their overthrow in 1326, and presumably is actually a petition of early Edward III, probably 1327.
