SC 8/14/674
Date
[? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Messyng (Messing), citizen of London.
Name(s)
de Messyng (Messing), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Messynge states that he had the two manors of Little Baddow and Terling from John de Goldington, and he was thrown out of these following a plea of the earl of Lancaster and his goods and chattels were taken away. He recovered the manors by law but was again thrown out by the sheriff who was an adherent of Despenser, and was only able to recover it by paying the sheriff 40 marks, and he has not been able to have the profit from the land for the last 3 years to his great damage. He requests grace and remedy.
Nature of endorsement
At common law.
Places mentioned
Little Baddow, [Essex]
Terling, [Essex].
People mentioned
John de Goldyngtone (Goldington)
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Geoffrey Dode
Thomas Gobioun, Sheriff of Essex
Hugh le Despenser.
Note
It seems unlikely that Messynge would be making this petition if Gobioun and his protector Despenser were still in power. Gobioun was replaced as sheriff by November 1324, but Despenser could still have protected him until 1326. However, the petition does not make any reference to Gobioun being the 'late sheriff', so it is quite possible that this is somewhat earlier, though the open criticism of Despenser seems strange so early.
