Date

Description
Petitioners
John de Stodelegh (Studley).
Name(s)
de Stodelegh (Studley), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stodelegh shows that Weston has wrongfully distrained him as he alleges that Stodelegh holds his land in Studley in chief of the earl, though he doesn't; he drove him to do homage to the earl, to answer in the court of the earl, and following the earl of Lancaster's fall, indicted him for taking the earl's goods, and breaking his parks. Stodelegh requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue at the common law against the bailiff.
Places mentioned
Studley, [Wiltshire]
Compton, [Wiltshire]
[Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Geoffrey de Weston, bailiff of Hugh le Despenser, earl of Winchester
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster.
Note
As the petition refers to Hugh le Despenser as 'late', this petition presumably dates to 1327 when those who felt they had been oppressed by him took the opportunity to seek remedy. It might be later, though it is unlikely to be significantly after 1327.
