Reference
SC 8/14/671
Date
[? 1323]
Description
Petitioners
William Dautreve (Dawtrey).
Name(s)
Dautreve (Dawtrey), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Dautreve shows that he was in the company of Thomas, earl of Lancaster, and was taken by the order of Despenser and imprisoned at Ripon, and whilst he was imprisoned the king's men took his goods and chattels which he had at Holbeck and elsewhere in Yorkshire, so that his wife and children are destitute until his delivery, and he cannot be delivered until he has paid his fine with the king and Despenser. He requests remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue by the way that is ordained for those of this complaint, and take a writ of imprisonment if it that is the suitable way.
Places mentioned
Ripon, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Holbeck, [West Riding of] Yorkshire
Yorkshire.
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Hugh le Despenser, the son.
Note
The date for this is difficult. If Dautreve was still in prison following Boroughbridge, and he states that he has not been delivered, this would suggest a date of 1323. There is no indication that this is as late as 1327 as the comments on the guard suggest.
