Reference
SC 8/14/665
Date
[c. 1319]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph Bolkyngg; John Bernard.
Name(s)
Bolkyngg; Bernard, Ralph; John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Bolkyngg and Bernard show that they had the manor of Knighton by the feoffment of Panyel until the earl of Arundel took Maud Panyel from them and the earl and Maud brought writs against them by the earl's power and lordship. Eventually Bernard sold the manor to the earl giving him a charter and seisin for 350 marks, of which only 50 marks was paid. Bolkyngg and Bernard request remedy for this duress.
Nature of endorsement
For this petition nothing.
Places mentioned
Knythingtone (Knighton), Wiltshire.
People mentioned
John Panyel
Edmund [fitz Alan], Earl of Arundel
Maud [Panyel], daughter of John Panyel.
Note
The petition is undated, but comments on the guard date this to c.1319 when the escheator north of the Trent was ordered not to intermeddle further with the manors and lands that they had by Panyel's feoffment. However this writ makes reference to a much wider group of lands including Knighton and makes no reference to the earl of Arundel, so it is not clear that this dating is entirely safe. Paynel's daughter (Maud in the petition, Matilda in the close rolls) is also noted to be married in the close rolls, though no mention of marriage is made in the petition. Is this possibly earlier than 1319 (CCR 1318-23, pp.168-9)? If so, no reference survives.
