SC 8/14/664
Date
[1325-1326]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas le Constable, parson of the church of Our Lady of Guildford.
Name(s)
Constable, Thomas
Addressees
King.
Occupation
parson of the church of Our Lady of Guildford
Nature of request
Petition and transcript of letters patent:1) Constable states that Edward II granted him the chapel of St Katherine on Drakhull which had come into the king's hand by the finding of an inquest that Wauncy had built it without licence of the king. However Bernard de Brocas by lavish gifts to the chancellor and treasurer have changed the king's will on this. Constable requests that he be able to have the chapel for his maintenance.2) Letters patent of Edward II granting the chapel to Constable following their forfeiture by Wauncy for a breach of the statute of mortmain.
Nature of endorsement
Let a writ containing the effect of the petition be sent to the justices of King's Bench that when they have viewed the charter made of the soil etc. to the chaplain and summoned before them the parson who now holds the chapel and heard the arguments etc., they should do justice.
Places mentioned
Guildford, [Surrey]
Drakehull (St Catherines Hill), [Surrey]
Westminster.
People mentioned
Richard le Wauncy, parson of the church of St Nicholas of Guildford
Bernard de Brocas, parson of the church of St Nicholas de Guildford
Robert Baldock, chancellor
Walter de Stapeldon, treasurer
Edward II, King of England.
Note
The original letters patent granting the chapel to Constable were dated 15 Nov. 1324, though no enrolled copy of this survives. For Brocas to have bribed Baldock and Stapeldon to change the grant, he would have had to have been acting between 15 Nov. 1324, the time of the making of the grant, and the removal of Stapeldon on 3 July 1325. The petition therefore would have to date to 1325-1326.
