Description
Petitioners
William Elys (Ellis) of Great Yarmouth.
Name(s)
Elys (Ellis), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Elys complains that whereas he was accused by Botild and Coupere at the last parliament held at Westminster in 51 Edward III after the feast of St George of taking goods from a Cog of Pruse and a Scottish ship by colour of his office as deputy to Richard Lyons, farmer of the petty customs, and then imprisoned in the Tower of London. In parliament it was ordered that the matter be enquired into by which he was acquitted. Elys requests that Botild and Cowper be made to come and answer him, and make satisfaction for their accusations according to the statute.
Nature of endorsement
[None].

Richard Lyons, farmer of the petty customs
Henry Luse, master of a Cog of Pruse
William Fauxhid, merchant of Scotland
[William Ufford], Earl of Suffolk
[Henry] de Percy, [Earl of Northumberland].
Note
This seems to date to early in the reign of Richard II, as it clearly refers to a parliament in the previous reign of Edward III. As an earlier petition was submitted in the parliament of January 1377, which was not answered, and Elys was acquitted and pardoned in April 1377, it is unlikely that this petition dates from far beyond the first parliament or so of the new reign (Rot. Parl., vol. II, pp.374b-375a, CPR 1374-7, p.455). See, however, PROME, parliament of January-March 1377, appendix, no. 8.
