The merchants show that other Irish and Welsh merchants import Irish cloth called Friseware and Irish wool but these are not cloths of colour or stripe, or length or width as was ordained in parliament. Also they are troubled by the collectors of the subsidy, and of alnage against the form and content of the grant of the subsidy since all customs are paid to the customs collectors in Ireland. The merchants request that it be ordained in this parliament that no subsidy or alnage be paid for these drapes and wool, and that it is stated in letters patent that they are not comprised in the statute.

Note
This survives as a transcript from common petitions that are dated in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.361 to the parliament held at Westminster on the quindene of St Hillary 1377. In addition there was a commission into the refusal of certain merchants of Warwickshire and Salop to pay the subsidy on Friseware issued on 7 November 1377 (CPR 1377-81, p.89). See also PROME, parliament of January-March 1377, appendix, no. 5.
