Reference
SC 8/13/649
Date
[1331]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel.
Name(s)
Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Petition in three parts:1) Arundel states that a great part of their muniments concerning his inheritance were taken away after the death of his father. He asks that they be renewed from those found enrolled in Chancery, and requests that the king confirm them.2) He further states that the king rendered to him the castle and honour of Arundel which his father held, making to the king what the king afterwards ordains. He requests that he hold it for the services which his father used to hold it.3) He further states that there were many goods and chattels which were his father's, and many debts owed to him from the Marches, which, following his father's death were granted to Roger de Mortimer. When the king rendered his inheritance to him part of the goods and chattels were found on the land. He requests that the king render these to him together with the debts which the tenants in his lordship owed to Mortimer.1)
Nature of endorsement
Let the rolls of Chancery be searched, and the charters that are found that concern the inheritance of his father are to be renewed and confirmed in due form.2) Let the charge that is being demanded for the castle and honour be examined.3) He is to have the goods and chattels that were his father's, and the debts mentioned in the petition to the value of £300 of the gift of the king.
Places mentioned
Arundel, [Sussex]
the Marches.
People mentioned
Edmund [Fitz Alan], Earl of Arundel, father of the petitioner
Roger de Mortimer.
Note
The guard entry refers to this petition being potentially dated to 1347-8 because it is in a section of Rot. Parl., vol. II headed as being from a Hale manuscript of 21-22 Edward III (p.205). Although the guard entry rejects this date correctly for 1331, it fails to notice that the Arundel petition is actually not part of the Hale petitions but rather copied from a petition surviving in the Tower of London, so did not belong to the Hale dating range. The petition does appear to date to 1331, or be a copy of a petition of 1331, as parts two and three of the petition are subsequently granted, with enrolments of the grants surviving in the patent rolls (CPR 1330-4, pp.191 & 194).
