Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/13/648
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Warewyk (Warwick).
Name(s)
de Warewyk (Warwick), Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Warewyk shows that when the king was earl of Chester he granted him the constabulary of the castle of Chester for life which he had until Damory, then justice of Chester ousted him without cause. Upon Warewyk's complaint the king ordered letters to Damory to certify why he had been ousted, by which it was found that he was wrongfully ousted. However though the king confirmed the grant at his parliament at Northampton, Oliver de Ingham, then justiciar did nothing because the grant was made for life, and before his time as justiciar. He requests remedy.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.2) He is to show his charter in Chancery, and let it be ordered to the justiciar that he certify for what reason he was ousted, and if it is found that the cause is not reasonable he should receive his office.
Places mentioned
Chester, [Cheshire]
Northampton, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
Richard Daimorie (Damory), justiciar of Chester
Oliver de Ingham, justiciar of Chester.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1331, when Oliver de Ingham's tenure as justiciar of Chester ended and he is referred to in the past tense in the petition. Although he did hold the office again, it is unlikely that this refers to that time in 1342 and 1344.
