Reference
SC 8/13/647A
Date
[1348]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Bekeryng (Beckering).
Name(s)
Bekeryng (Beckering), Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Bekeryng shows that he was pardoned the payment of a fine of 400 marks by the king before Calais by the request of the earl of Lancaster on condition that he pay £100 at certain terms at the king's Chamber. He missed the first payment, and although he paid it at the second term the Exchequer ordered that he and his mainpernors be distrained for the 400 marks, and Bekering be arrested and placed in the Fleet prison where he is detained. He requests that notwithstanding the default of payment at the first term that the king order that he enjoy the benefit of the pardon, and that he pay at the chamber the remainder of the £100, that he be delivered from prison, his lands and tenements be restored to him, and his mainpernors be discharged from their mainprise.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that Beckeryng pay the £40 which are in arrears, and that he be discharged from the 400 marks that he was pardoned without condition.
Places mentioned
Calais, [France]
Fleet prison, [London].
People mentioned
[Henry of Grosmont], Earl of Lancaster.
Note
This is dated to 1348 by the details given in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.175; see also PROME, parliament of January-February 1348, appendix, no. 86. As all the accompanying documents found as parts B and C are dated to May 1347, and Bekeryng had missed the first payment at the quinzene of St John, but made the payment at the quinzene of St Martin, it would seem likely that this petition must indeed be early 1348.
