Nature of request
The burgesses show that the town was assessed for the tenth and fifteenth granted to the king in his sixth year which they have paid at each grant of the tax, but which they can no longer endure without being destroyed or leaving the town. Many, since the grant in the sixth year, have died or left the town so that the charge lies on those that remain, who will be ruined without remedy. They request that an enquiry is made of the truth, and that they be taxed according to the true value of their goods and chattels in their hands.
