Nature of request
The tenants state that the town, church and their goods and chattels were destroyed by fire so that the greater part of the people of the commonalty of the town are beggars. However the taxers and collectors of the fifteenth, tenth and wool will have no regard for their predicament and demand the sum that they ought to have paid before the fire, which they are in no situation to pay. They request that they by taxed on the quantity of their goods that they have now and in times to come, and not on the sum from before the fire, and that the king order the chancellor to make a commission or writs to the taxers on this matter and also to the barons of the Exchequer that they make allowance to them for the time of the fire on 23 May 1345, and for times to come.
