Description
Petitioners
Tenants of the hamlet of Witcombe.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The tenants state that John Inge, late assessor of the fifteenth maliciously increased their assessment by a substantial sum. Because of this the people are leaving the hamlet so that there are only five tenants left who cannot pay the increased sum, so that they request that the king remove the increased sum and permit them to have the ancient assessment.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.
Places mentioned
Wydecombe (Witcombe), [Somerset]
Martock hundred, [Somerset].
People mentioned
John Inge, assessor of the fifteenth.
Note
This is dated to 1348 by the details given in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.175; see also PROME, parliament of January-February 1348, appendix, no. 60. A commission was issued to examine the complaints made by the people of Witcombe on 9 November 1347 (CPR 1345-8, p.466), though this may relate to an earlier petition on the matter since the commission supplies fuller details than in the present petition.
