Nature of request
The people show that John Inge and the late abbot of Forde were assigned by the king to assess and collect the fifteenth granted to the king in his eighth year. In Broadway at that time Thomas atte Apse had many goods and services when the hamlet was assessed, and he paid a substantial part of the assessment, but he died in the twelfth year of this reign. When the fifteenth on wool or other tallages have been granted the hamlet has been charged for the entire amount which they cannot endure, so they request remedy.

This is dated to 1348 by the details given in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.175; see also PROME, parliament of January-February 1348, appendix, no. 59. The petition itself makes reference to the assessment of 1334 and to the death of the merchant in 1338.
