Reference
SC 8/13/630
Date
[1348]
Description
Petitioners
People of London and elsewhere.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people show that Bavent enfeoffed the king of his lands. However he had borrowed money in diverse manners and at diverse times, and being greatly indebted the king re-enfeoffed him of the lands to pay his debts. Bavent is now in the governance of the Dominicans of London and has attempted to avoid his debts so that the people request that they be able to have their recovery against him by the law, as the king will be charged for the debts after his death, and his creditors are outrageously impoverished and damaged by the delay.
Nature of endorsement
They should have their suit by a writ of debt and account and in other manners at the common law.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Roger Bavent.
Note
The petition is dated to 1348 by the details given in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.175; see also PROME, parliament of January-February 1348, appendix, no. 51. This is likely to be the correct date, for the king granted lands to Bavent which Bavent had formerly granted to the king on 18 May and 20 June 1346 (CPR 1345-8, pp.92 & 125).
