Description
Petitioners
Prior of the Dominicans in London; Arnold Lym, friar of the Dominicans in London.
Name(s)
Lym, Arnold
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Prior of the Dominicans in London; friar of the Dominicans in London
Nature of request
The prior and brother Lym complain that:1) Whereas the pope and Adam, late bishop of Winchester have determined that Lym is a friar preacher, and not a monk, the abbot and monks of Hyde have challenged this falsely and procured bulls that he ought to be restored to their order. They imprisoned him for nine years and mistreated and tortured him so that he has not recovered his health. Thomas Haspal and others have cognisance of these matters.2) Whereas the provincial prior of the Dominicans barred the challenges to Lym, the abbot and monks have procured certain people of their party to make false indictments against them so that they are ruined and are unable to have writs in Chancery for their allies without making heavy fines which they cannot do.3) Also Blaunkchival and others at Westminster in the presence of the king and his justices took Lym and imprisoned him for 5 days and took from him his charter of protection from the king, money and other goods in his keeping. After this an agreement was made and closed by the oaths of Blaunkchival and others, but they have broken these and bribed the bishop of Winchester's clerks to the damage of the friar and his order. They request that a remedy is ordained for them, or that the bishop of Winchester be ordered to summon the abbot, monks and the seculars, by whose oaths he is able to know to redress the complaints, and also take Lym into his special protection until the truth of the matter has been enquired into.
Nature of endorsement
If he wish to sue at common law they should have a writ of trespass upon his complaint, and the council will speak to the bishop to redress what has been done wrong as concerns him
