Description
Petitioners
People of the town of Arundel.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people show that in the twelfth year of Edward III their town was burnt and destroyed, and thereafter by a writ of the king their moveable goods were re-assessed, and they paid this sum. The town was again burnt in the eighteenth year of Edward III, but the assessors would not consider this and levied the sum assessed before the first fire so that they are impoverished and ruined. They request that the king and his council have regard for their great loss and mischief and grant them a writ to the assessors that they receive from the people the same sum that they were assessed at in the last tax, and grant them a patent that in case a new tenth is granted following the octave that the sum assessed in the last tax be levied from the people of the town, and that they are not during that term charged otherwise for the tax.
