Description
Petitioners
William of Clifton, abbot of Darley.
Name(s)
Clifton, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
abbot of Darley
Nature of request
The abbot states that he holds lands in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire in pure and perpetual alms by the gift of Fitz Stephen, which has been confirmed by the king's progenitors, and as such does not pay aids to the king for the knighting of his son, and the marriage of his daughter except one payment to Edward I made in duress. The same is now demanded of the abbot and he has been distrained to pay the same. He requests a writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they should view the charters and confirmations, and if it is found that the abbot holds the lands in pure and perpetual alms, then they release the distresses and discharge the abbot of the aid from those lands and tenements notwithstanding the payment made to Edward I.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that when they have viewed the charters and confirmations, and searched the rolls and remembrances of the Exchequer and also summoned any of the justices if it is necessary to do so in discharging the abbot as law and reason demand.
Places mentioned
Darley, [Derbyshire]
Pentrich, [Derbyshire]
Ripley, [Derbyshire]
Chilwell, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
Ralph son of Stephen (Fitz Stephen).
Note
This is dated to 1348 by the details given in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.175; see also PROME, parliament of January-February 1348, appendix, no. 40. The aid in question was undoubtedly that for the knighting of Edward III's eldest son, granted in 1346.
