Description
Petitioners
John Fitz John of Sutton on Trent.
Name(s)
John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Sutton states that he granted the manor of Bradfield to Nicholas de la Beche, who granted to him an annual rent to be taken from the manor with the permission of the king because it was held in chief from the king. In addition Beche was bound in a statute merchant of £200 to him. Subsequently Beche enfeoffed Ash with the manor and was reinfeoffed of the same with his wife Margery in fee tail. After Beche's death Margery held the manor but was ravished and married by Dalton because of which the manor was taken into the king's hands and leased to Poynings. Sutton requests that he be paid the annual rent, arrears and the £200 for the statute.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition be brought into Chancery. Regarding the first part of the petition good men are to be assigned to enquire in the presence of the keeper upon the points contained in the petition, and the inquest to be returned into Chancery, and viewed and examined, and a search made to see if an acquittance or defeasance can be found concerning the rent barring the demand. The keeper and sergeants of the king are to be summoned to hear the reasons for the king and the party, and justice is to be done. And regarding the second part of the petition concerning the £200, again this is to be brought and viewed and an inquest held to find if there is any acquittance or defeasance. This is to be done so that the king can be advised before execution is made if it seems to his court it is necessary to advise him.
