Reference
SC 8/12/583
Date
[1337]
Description
Petitioners
Henry son of Hugh (Fitz Hugh).
Name(s)
Hugh (Fitz Hugh), Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Fitz Hugh shows that he and his ancestors have peaceably held 6,000 acres of moor and pasture in Mickleton. Clifford claims it as his belonging to Brough, and has drawn it from the county of Yorkshire into Westmorland to Fitz Hugh's disinheritance. He requests that the king assign some great people to ride the bounds of the counties, so that by this the boundary can be finally determined between the two counties.
Nature of endorsement
The king is advised to assign good men to make the bounds and perambulation between the two counties, and to inform all those whom wish to attend of the making of the bounds.
Places mentioned
Mickleton in Teesdale, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Brough under Stainmore (Brough), Westmorland
Yorkshire
Westmorland.
People mentioned
Robert de Clifford.
Note
The Ryley transcript in Rot. Parl. makes this part of a section of petitions in parliament for 11 Edw. III (1337). This seems to be correct, for a writ relating to this was issued on 16 February 1338 (CCR 1337-9, p.384).It is further confirmed by CPR 1338-40 p.66, which is dated at Westminster, 16 February 1338, and is in response to a petition from Henry Fitz Hugh to replace two men who have been appointed for the perambulation and are unavailable (SC 8/53/2622).
