Description
Petitioners
Richard de Bettoyne (Bretoigne) of London;2) Mayor and citizens of Oxford.
Name(s)
de Bettoyne (Bretoigne), Richard
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
1) Bettoyne shows that at Edward III's coronation he, then mayor of London, performed the office of butler as other mayors of London had done at earlier coronations, and received a gold cup with a lid and a ewer of gold enamel as his fee by the assent of the king's council. The sheriffs of London now come out of the Exchequer to levy from Bettoyne's goods and chattels £89 12s. 6d. for the fee, so that he requests a remedy be ordained for him.2) The major and citizens of Oxford by their charter come to London to the coronation to aid the mayor of London. They, if it pleases the king and council, will voluntarily pay the fee as long as they are discharged of the service.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer are ordered to search the rolls and remembrances of the Exchequer concerning the business. And if they find that the mayors of London at the coronations of the king's progenitors have had their fee allowed at the Exchequer, then they are to make allowance for Bettoyne's fee, and surcease their demands that they have made for it.

People mentioned
[Henry], Earl of Lancaster
Robert de Wodehous (Woodhouse).
Note
The Ryley transcript in Rot. Parl. makes this part of a section of petitions in parliament for 11 Edw. III (1337). This seems to be a considerable time after the events referred to in the petition, as Bettoyne's tenure as mayor only lasted the year. Unfortunately no other references survive to more certainly date this, though the attribution of Ryley may well be correct (Rot. Parl., vol II, p.96).
