Description
Petitioners
Isabel de la Mote, widow of William de la Mote, knight; Edmund de la Mote, son of Isabel de la Mote.
Name(s)
Mote; Mote, Isabel; Edmund
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that William de la Mote leased his land in Standon to Maulay for the term of his life and 10 years beyond, the which time has a long time passed, Maule having died at Bannockburn. Thereafter the heir entered the lands and sold them in fee to Damory and his wife while William de la Mote was in service in Gascony where he died. The Damorys have wasted the lands, and the ministers of the king for a debt charged on the land have ordered the lands to be seized into the king's hand, assessed and afterwards delivered to Lady de Burgh rendering the assessment until the debt was paid. The petitioners request that the king should wish to grant the lands to them, paying the extent at the Exchequer per annum until the debt be fully paid, and that he by his letters 'priere mover' to the Lady de Burgh that she will willingly assent to the restitution with livery of the land, as the petitioners are of insufficient power to sue against her by other processes.
Nature of endorsement
They should sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Standon, Hertfordshire
Strivelyn (Stirling), [Stirlingshire, Scotland]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
William de la Mote, husband and father respectively of the petitioners

[Elizabeth] de Burgh, wife of Roger Damory.
Note
Although the petition is dated to 1335 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90, noting these to be petitions in parliament for 9 Edward III, the suit that resulted from the petition had run into difficulties in October 1337, and it is possible that this petition should be dated more appropriately to later 1336, but more likely early 1337 (CCR 1337-9, p.198).
