SC 8/12/566
Date

Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Newborough in Anglesey.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses state that they are enfeoffed by a charter of Edward I, which has been confirmed by the current king, by which they are quit of all manner of services as other free boroughs of Wales are. The king's ministers there are now distraining them to go to Scotland without reason as no other town of borough status in Wales is being so distrained except them. They request that the king order a writ to the justice to cease making these distraints.
Nature of endorsement
They are to show their charter in Chancery, and their reasons will be heard, and justice will be done to them there.
Places mentioned
Newborough, Anglesey, [Wales]
Wales.
Note
The petition is dated to 1335 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90, noting these to be petitions in parliament for 9 Edward III. It is quite possible that this date is correct, for the confirmation of the borough's charter by Edward III was made on 8 December 1330 (CPR 1330-34, p.27), and the king was actively involved on campaigns with the support of the Balliol regime from 1331-5. It might perhaps be thought that around 1332-3 might be a more likely date though when the king was involved on the campaign culminating in the battle of Halidon Hill.
