Reference
SC 8/12/564
Date
[1335]
Description
Petitioners
John Cayly (Cailly), sheriff of Norfolk.
Name(s)
Cayly (Cailly), John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
sheriff of Norfolk
Nature of request
The sheriff shows that the office of sheriff was usually joined with that of constable of Norwich Castle. And now the office is granted to Causton for his life by which the king suffers great loss and distress on each account of the sheriff, and also the people who are appealed or indicted of felonies suffer great oppressions and diverse extortions to have suit of prison of such a constable who has life tenure. In addition the office is not so well kept now, so that Cayley requests that the king with those of his council have better advisement so that by the making of such a new grant they are not the greater loser.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the charter made of the constabulary of Norwich in the manner in which this petition makes mention is made in prejudice of the king, and that if it pleases the king that the charter be revoked, and the constabulary delivered to the sheriff to hold it as it has been before this time.
Places mentioned
Norfolk
Norwich, Norfolk.
People mentioned
Robert de Causton (Cawston), knight.
Note
The petition is dated to 1335 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90 noting these to be petitions in parliament for 9 Edward III. This petition has to date to the period 18 February 1335 to 6 October 1335. Causton was appointed to the constabulary on the former date, and replaced Cailly as sheriff on the latter date (CPR 1334-8, p.76; List of Sheriffs, p.87).
