Reference
SC 8/12/563
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Clifford, brother and heir of Roger de Clifford.
Name(s)
de Clifford, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Clifford shows that the king by the common asset of parliament granted the keeping of all the castles, manors, lands and tenements which were of Clifford's inheritance to him to hold until he was of full age upon finding mainprise in Chancery. However a new commission has given the keeping of the manor of Skipton to Percy though it is part of Clifford's inheritance against the form of the first grant. Clifford requests that the king have regard for the shameful death suffered by his brother, and that the grant should remain in force, and that the commission made to Percy be revoked in as much as Clifford has found mainprise for the entry of his inheritance.
Nature of endorsement
The king demands of the chancellor if he made a commission of a more recent date, and the reason why.
Places mentioned
Skipton in Craven, West Riding of Yorkshire.
People mentioned
Roger de Clifford, brother of the petitioner
Henry de Percy.
Note
This seems to date to 1327, though it is dated to 1335 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90 noting these to be petitions in parliament for 9 Edward III. A whole series of reference in the Close Rolls date Clifford's entrance into his inheritance to this date (CCR 1327-30, pp.132, 159, 246, 248-9, & 286). In addition Percy was granted the keeping of the castle on 11 February 1327 (CFR 1327-37, p.7).
