Date
[c. 1304]
Description
Petitioners
William de Brewose (Braose).
Name(s)
de Brewose (Braose), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Brewose shows that he and his ancestors hold the barony of Bramber, and enquire and do all things that a sheriff does on his tourn within his barony and the hundreds pertaining to it, which things belong to the crown, and he and his ancestors' right to exercise them has been tried before justices in eyre. These things, it seems to Brewose, no man can have without a special deed of the king, but William Paynel came and exercised them in several of the hundreds to the disinheritance of the crown. Brewose requests that this liberty be seized into the king's hand until Paynel has shown by which warrant he claims to have this liberty against the dignity of the crown.
Nature of endorsement
The sheriff of Sussex is ordered to bring William Paynel to the Exchequer at Easter in a month to show what he has for himself to hold the liberties within written, and by what right he uses them, and that the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, in the presence of those of the council of the king who were called, examine that business and do justice.

Note
Another petition on this matter (SC 8/182/9081) clearly dates to 1304, being formerly enclosed in a resultant Chancery warrant dated at Stirling on 29 July 1304. Presumably the present petition also dates from that period, as indicated by the editors of PROME. Mis-dated to 1335 in Rot. Parl., vol. II, p.90, which mistakenly assigns it to the parliament of 9 Edward III.
