Reference
SC 8/12/558
Date
[1335-1337]
Description
Petitioners
James le Botiller (Butler), Earl of Ormond.
Name(s)
Botiller (Butler), Earl of Ormond, James
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
1) The earl requests the confirmation of his liberty of Tipperary to himself and his heirs as was promised by the king when it was granted to him. The liberty was granted to him to maintain his honour and estate as earl.2) The earl requests respite of his debts until the following year, which debts are owed at the Irish and English Exchequers relating to his service and the service of his ancestors in wars in Gascony and Ireland under Edward I and II. He requests this respite so that it can be searched as to whether the debts are clear or not clear.3) The earl requests that the king return the prise of wine in Ireland which his ancestors held, and which was seized into the hand of the king on the death of the earl's father, and only delivered to him at the king's will.1)
Nature of endorsement
Regarding the first petition he should hold the liberty at the will of the king according to the grant which he had from the king.2) Regarding the second petition he is to be respited from all manner of debts until Pentecost next to come.3) Regarding the third petition he should hold the prises in the manner in which he holds them by delivery of the king until the king is better advised by his council.

Ireland
Dublin, [Ireland]
Drogheda, [Ireland]
Waterford, [County Waterford, Ireland]
Limerick, [County Limerick Ireland].
People mentioned
Edmund le Botiller (Butler), father of the petitioner.
Note
Dated to 1335 by the heading in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90 noting these to be petitions in parliament for 9 Edward III. However the guard notes suggest that this should be dated to 1337 or later. It is unlikely to be later than 22 April 1337, when the earl received a grant for life of the prise of wine (CPR 1334-8, p.429). What reason there is to dispute the Rot. Parl. entry is not clear (Rot. Parl., vol II, p.90).
