SC 8/12/551
Date
[1334]
Description
Petitioners
People of the hamlets of Thorney and Wigsley.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people state that they used with the hamlet of Broadholme to respond and present at eyres and elsewhere with 4 people and the reeve until the last eyre at Nottingham when the prioress of Broadholme brought a writ that she and her tenants did not need to do service to the king, so that the justices of eyre stopped proceedings against them. The people came and claimed that they could not present or answer without the aid of Broadholme, but the justices would not allow this and amerced them. They request remedy that they be discharged of their service as the prioress has been discharged.
Nature of endorsement
The record and process concerning this matter contained in the bill are to be brought into Chancery by a writ of the great seal, and when it has come it is ordered that it is brought before the justices assigned to hold pleas of the king, and they are ordered that when they have heard the plea of the people and called before them the men of Broadholme, and others who are to be called, they are to do justice.
Places mentioned
Thornhagh (Thorney), [Nottinghamshire]
Wiggeleye (Wigsley), [Nottinghamshire]
Broadholme, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
William de Herle, justice in eyre
Prioress of Broadholme, lady of Broadholme.
Note
The petition in Rot. Parl., vol II, p.73, dates to 1334. There is a short discussion of the dating of the petition in Rot. Parl., vol. II, p.83a (SC 8/263/13114) on the guard of this petition. The endorsement to SC 8/263/13114 simply states that 'it seems to the council that this petition is not reasonable', which seems to suggest that it is earlier than SC 8/12/551, as it seems unlikely that the people of the two hamlets would submit two petitions for consideration, and not refer to the legal proceedings that had been ordered by SC 8/12/551 if that had preceded SC 8/263/13114.
